on brand new DVD-R. Cendyne 4X DVD-R (properties shows as Pioneer). DVDs play, WinExplorer recognizes drive, so does SmartRipper. I copied a movie (for back up purposes) to the hard drive, now I want to backup to the DVD-R. But two brand new disks (different brands) show 0 free space. Any thoughts?

I have XP and the Radeon 7500 All-in-One.

I use windows ME, and if I look at the properties of a blank dvd-r within windows then it shows up with one music file and no free space.

The problem I have is that it is windows unable to distinguish exactly what disc is loaded.

Have a look at the blank disc within dvd decrypter (iso read mode) this should give you an accurate description of the dvd.

However, it is irrelevant, cos if I then burn that disc, it burns fine.

Have you tried burning a movie to a dvd yet as I believe if you do, it should burn no problems with nero/recordnowmax or other burning software.

Blank discs will show up as 0 space beacuse they are [bold]blank.[/bold] That also means no file structure or anything on them, because they can only be written to once.

You blank disc will hold about 4.36GB or 4464 MB. (4.7 billion bytes)

I always aim my files to be around 4.34 or 4444, to allow for a margin or error.

Thanks for the input. I copied the original dvd to the hard drive using smartripper. The movie plays fine from the hard drive (at least after I changed from francaise). Smartripper also shows 0 space available, and when I asked it to write to the disk it tried, but instantly ran out of space.

Is Smartripper a burning program? Unless I'm mistaken it isn't. Don't you have to move stuff over to your hard drive, then burn to DVD-R using Nero or Roxio?

Ken - I think you were absolutely correct. I tried the whole thing (rip and burn) again using DVD Decrypter using the instruction shown on Afterdawn. Worked like a charm.

I've tried the back-up copy on my computer and the DVD is the bedroom. Works perfectly with subtitles, language (Bill Murray doesn't translate well to French). I'll try watching the whole thing this evening downstairs.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

Maybe not so braindead after all - RGF
