I just recieved my brand new Dell XPS M1710, and there is a problem already! When I go to shut down, the computer has to end approximatley 15 processes before it shuts down (so frustrating!). Some of the things it says it must end are: MB_Dummy Window, CLREngine3 Dummy Window, Helper MSgListnerWnd, hpqtra08.exe, CiceroUlWindFrame and explorer.exe. I have done every scan I can think of and I don't seem to have a virus. Can someone PLEASE help me. Not being a log reading wizz myself, I had a look around and got these links to a couple of tutorials. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ Good luck.
Thanks but the tutorials weren't much help. It seems like my log file is fine. I dont know why the computer won't just shut down without having to end all of these processes. Anyone have any insight?
Hi, You could try running msconfig (click start menu, run, type msconfig) go to startup tab and stop some of the crap that Dell has obviously checked on there to launch at startup and run in the background. Things like iPod service, iTuneshelper can be unchecked. Obviously don't stop your sondcard or graphics card from running. Then click the services tab and then click hide microsoft services and have a look at what remains and see if there is any crap. See how you go, if you have trouble by turning something off that you shouldn't have, just go back in and turn it on again. M
You can try uninstalling the programs you don't need. It might even give your computer a speed boost. Brand name computers tend to have too much unused programs installed (for money of course). So you can uninstall some of the unused one. Another way to go is getting a software like TuneUp Utilities and use its start up manager. Block programs that you don't want to start automatically at startup and that's it. You don't have to shut them down when you're shutting down your computer because they were never started. Hope this help!
did this start doing this just the other day? and before the system was working fine? just do a system restore to the day before you started having your problem, that should solve your problem
