I'm not meaning to hijack your thread but I am looking to do something like this as well. I am looking to spend ~$700-900. I hope to be able run this via hdmi. I'd still like it to be able to handle most games and applications.

Nottus: Which games and applications, specifically?

I guess I have no specific applications that I can't already run. I just want more of a more all-around machine. I plan on having it stream HD. Just so long as it can run the more recent games without problems.

Is $700-$900 for just the main unit, or does it have to include any peripherals? Do you have any other aims? More storage, bluray drive, specifically?

I'd like to have at a minimum 1 TB. Blu-ray is unimportant and its just for the tower itself.

Thank you very much that is pretty much exactly what I am looking for. I just never know what is compatible with what. Do I need anything extra in the cooling department or should the stock equipment included be enough.

Unless you intend to overclock the system, stock cooling will be sufficient.
