Building new computer.. what to buy

for good gaming fast computer, whats gonna be the most expensive thing the video card right, good websites cheap to buy stuff from if anyone knows of any and discounts and stuff

I'm wanting to build my first build with a maximum budget of around £350.

I have done a bit of research and i have come to this system (at ebuyer):

Where do I get all the cables that joins everything together or do they come with the MOBO and PSU?

I'm going to chuck this comp once I make the new one so I should be able to take the modem out and stick it in, right? I should be able to take old parts like floppy and my cd-rw out and stick it into a new build with no prob or would the age of this computer (4 years and 1/4) affect anything? Thanks for the info on cables as it has been buging me for a while! Could anybody give comments on the parts and if the combination is ok or tell me how I can tell if the combo will work?

thanks, Great tool! Comes to under 250w so that means a minimum of 325 and an extra 55w should be enough for upgrading memory later witch takes an extra 10w.

Mobo has 6x Hi-Speed USB - Additional Connectors (Optional)2x Hi-Speed USB so 4 at the back and 2 at the front not including extra,Network adapter - Marvell Yukon 88E8001 - Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet. So I won't need to contact my broadband company, built in sound!

Is the differeence between 478 & 775 is that 775 supports ddr2 and 478 only supports ddr1? 775 Asus mobo is just above £100 (£30 pounds more expensive) unless there is a real advantage (in the future) to having a 775 rather than a 478 then I will consider it but otherwise I don't see why.

I was also wondering what the difference between P4 and P4E?

ok back to the main subject of the thread. buying a new computer with what to get, such as whats the best ram for gaming, motherboard, cpu, powersupply and iam also thinking about water cooling any ideas?

Not sure why you would need water-cooling. I am in the middle of buying a new PC, it wont really be for gaming, but it will be extremely capable and will cost around £1400. I'll list my individual components and explain why im going for them:

Processor:
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego 90nm:



I chose this processor because it outperforms nearly every other processor out there, including the high spec Intel P4's. Also, this is the San Diego variance which has SSE3 technology to make it faster again. Its 90nm, so it runs cooler than the 130nm equivalent. Its cheaper at £350 inc VAT than that of the P4's ranging from £410 inc VAT for the 3.8GHz one, to much more for the 3.46GHz EE processor. Here's an idea of it on the performance processor scale:



Motherboard:
Gigabyte K8NF-9 nForce4 (Socket 939) PCI Express Motherboard:



I chose this motherboard to match the Socket 939 AMD chip above. It costs £72 and has everything you'd need in a board.

Memory:
Crucial 1GB (2x512MB) DDR2 PC5300 667MHz Ballistix Dual Channel Kit



New DDR2 memory at PC5300 667MHz, so it will be fast. Its also dual channel and is a good make, and the cost is only £176

Case:

The case is £60 and looks awesome. It has loads of room in it and ill be adding in Coolermaster dynamic detector (£12) for extra fan controls as shown below.



I'll also be adding this Coolermaster fan system (£26) in between my two DVD Writers, just to give a bit of added cooling:



Power Supply:
Akasa Ultra Quiet 400W Paxpower Active PFC ATX2.0 PSU



Its a decent power supply running at 18db of noise. I was originally going to get a 460W power supply, but 400W is probably more than enough and only costs £46

Graphics Card:
HIS Excalibur ATI Radeon X800 ICEQII TURBO 256MB DDR3 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express)



Its a decent ATI x800 256MB graphics card with a 398MHz processor. It uses 256bit Quad Channel GDDR3 Memory at 910MHz. It costs £179

Hard Disk Drive:
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10 NCQ 250GB 6B250SO SATA 16MB Cache



Nothing fancy, a decent 7,200rpm 250GB only costing £99. Its fast SATA and has a good 16MB cache.

DVD Writers:
Pioneer DVR-109XL 16 x 16 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter Ltd Edit Aliminium



I'll probably have two of these running in it, or else ill just get the one of them. A great value DVD writer with a cool look - cant beat the DVR109 and its one in a long range of Pioneer writers ive owned. Costs £45

Monitor:
Benq FP91E 19" LCD Monitor - Silver



Its a top monitor, ok not the most expensive one around, but with a contrast ratio of 1000:1, 8ms response time and DVI input, it surely has to be the best value one.

Mouse/Keyboard:
Logitech Cordless Optical Desktop Rechargeable Black/Silver



Its a decent cordless desktop muse and keyboard. Not broadband, and probably not as good as the £80+ big brother ones, but in my opinion, good value for what you get.

Total cost is around £1400

reason why water cooler because its quiet no need for fans and it cools better than fans u can buy it sepreate and hook it up yourself

 

Its quieter, but your HDD, DVD, etc will make noise, so unless you really need silence, its not really that important. Secondly, for the price of the water cooling system, why spend that when you could be buying better components? Water cooling is ok for overclocked processors etc, but if your spending that amount for water-cooling, in the range of £150-£200 (i know u cant get a cheap £60 kit), then why not get the £500 vapochill - quiet and actually chills the inside of the case...

true really i wanted something quiet because i hate loud fan noise but is there other quiet fans that do a good job in cooling? im not going to overclock... also all the components u named are they like the top of the line, because ill probely be going the same track as u buying the stuff, also what website are u buying it from or know of any good cheap websites

Im in the UK and the website im using is www.overclockers.oc.uk

The components i have listed are pretty top of the range, you can get better stuff, but really, unless your a 24/7 gamer, which i certainly am not, i think there is no need for it.

As for the cooling issue, im running cheap enoughcooling units, which will do the job ok. Remember that a lot of power supplies give off noise anyway, unless you get a fanless one. Mine is a quiet one and still gives off 18bd or something....

I'm from the US.I am currently building a system and putting it together one peice at a time.I have the motherboard that Oriphus has, a Gigabyte k8nf.It was recommended by the store salesman at PC Club.I wanted a PCI-E video port and the AMD64 939 pin set.I wanted to get the Either the Gigabyte or Asus with the SLI setup to run two video cards at the same time but it cost alot more.Intel has a new 64 proccessor too.This is my first time building one.So far I have a Gigabyte k8nf board, Lite-on DL burner and a DVD-Rom drive.Sound is on board 8.1 channel.Floppy drive to boot the system if needed.300w PSU that came with my case that I'll upgrade to either a 400 or 550 watt PSU.And 512 Corsair DDR2 Ram.Trying to budget it out the best I can.I shouldhave went online for some things.I'm just going to get a cheap video card under 200 dollars.I found one for 169.00 an Nvidia card eVga 6600GT 128mb pci-e.From pcclub.Here is some good websites to go to: www.tigerdirect.com, www.pricewatch.com, www.newegg.com, and www.pcclub.com.

 

I just upgraded my system last month. Bought most of my stuff from TigerDirect.com. They run monthly specials......saved me over a $100.00 total instead of buying retail.
