    Hi,

I'm not quite sure if this is the proper place to be posting this but I needed some help.

I'm looking to either build or buy a server for my office to network the computers and have a central storage device with backup capabilties. The thing is though I know very little about servers. I looked at dell's website which was reccomended to me but they are quite pricey. Also I was told that I need atleast 4 gigs of ram, but ram isn't very diffcult to install, which leads me to my next question. Is it very difficult to build a server or am I better of paying for one? Also where abouts would I go to buy a server in Canada.

To tell you the truth I don't know the first thing about them and if anybody could reccomend some sites that I could read up on I'd really appreciate it, my google search results have not been to friendly.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

I'm thinking building one would be cheaper though i really can't tell you what type of software to run on it. I'm running a home media server now but. I'm running Windows XP on it. And here's two websites that i found pretty cheap parts on newegg.com and pricewatch.com.

how many computers do u want 2 run with this server?

You could just build a computer with lots of hdd and 4gb game a fastish cpu and call it a server. (cheap)

or u buy a rack that can hold blades as u want more speed or hdd space u buy more blades 4 ur server rack. (more expensive but better upgrade options) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blade_server

Yep, you'll need a good amount of ram, the more pc's you have on your network + requests they send to the server the more ram and cpu you'll need.

I'm not a big expert on this field. Try to find a friend who's into the arear and ask him for a discount or something.
