DMA must be turned on, please search aD, there have been MANY threads about this same problem. Also try updating your burners firmware. Good luck!
@techpunk hi to add to what DVDBack23 has said you are burning very close to the outer edge of the disc, where most errors occure. set shrink to 4300mb never heard of these, put it through DVD identifier and post the ID keep the burn speed to 4x, or lower for rubbish media to lessen the chance of errors
my shrink is set at 4464 is that bad..i never have any errors but does everyone here have their's set lower than that???
@movies27 I set my shrink target to 4300 - 4400 depending on media used. Less than great media gets the 4300 and Tys get 4400. The dye coating can become incomplete at the edged of the disc. By lowering your target size, you tell shrink not to burn to the edge where bad media has problems. I think a target of 4364 keeps the last 1mm of media from being used. If you get an error at the end of a movie, getting that last 1mm of data will not seem like such a great idea. I have seen people go higher than what shrink sets up as default. As long as you have no problems in playback, you can experiment. You could try some tests with a DVD-RW disc just to see what different target settings do. There is a trade off. The lower target size stays away from the edge of the media, but makes you compress a movie more. Usually this isn't a big difference. If the media is no good at the edge of a disc, that will affect your playback more so than the amount of compression you used. @techpunk It looks like your media is shutting you down on this, or it is your drive not being able to sense the media(firmware). You could try a different brand/type of media, just as a quick fix. The power calibration error could also be a firmware out of date issue along with the burner not being able to give you anything in the media specific part of the log. There should be something in there besides all zeroes. Also: Something is gobbling up half of your memory. Try shutting down programs before burning. It probably didn't have anything to do with this problem, but could be an issue in the future.
Beside what other members had metnioned, you need to completely wipe out ROXIO from your system. Roxio is not suitable with your Nero, it will only conflicts with Nero and causing you to produce more coasters down the road. Go here http://www.downloadjunction.com/product/store/15199 and get it to zap and wipe out Roxio. NOTE: you may need to use high quality media such as the famous Taiyo Yuden (authentic Yuden is also the 8X DVD+R Fuji & Sony "Made In Japan"), Verbatim (MCC003 & MCC004), Maxell "Made In Japan" and the Ritek.
@ techpunk ouch, u got some REALLY crappy media there..lemme take a guess as who the brand is...hehe 1. GQ (supposedly called "great quality") but is in fact closer to "grotesque quality", this is some really poor quality media 2. HQ (supposedly referred to as "high quality") and again, is SO far from it's own NAME, utter rubbish~ this is the 8x dvd-r from BOTH the above brands i mentioned... first, when using really poor quality media, NEVER burn @ max speed or in this case 8x, i would TRY 4x or even 2x if possible... the MEDIA is definitely the culprit here, that's all that REALLY stands out in my mind..and your burn speed...everything else is ok, the DMA could be worked on, but you have plenty of memory available...blah blah blah... GOOD quality media suggestions in my sig...please, STAY AWAY from ANY brand that has the word "QUALITY" in it's name, this is OFTEN TIMES, quite the OPPOSITE...high quality, great quality, piss poor quality, or whatnot *enter word here* quality; stay away from these kind of brands
@maxburn my shrink was set at 4464 by default..but i never had any movie problems...i was just wandering why mine was set at this default & no else's was..i only use high quality media like sony & maxell though too...i wont lower it becaue i'd hate to compress the movie anymore than shrink already does...i've donbe a few hundred so i guess i'm ok...thanks for your input tho.
@movies27 - i religiously stick to 4300MB, and i only use top notch media but 4300MB is still way close to the edge. horses for courses i guess but i'd rather play it safe myself
i guess i need to consider this but i've had no problems as of yet....do you notice any quality loss with it set at 4300 @ creaky
@movies27 hi the reason most of us set our burn target to 4300 mb or 4360 mb is the fact that the manufactuers (i assume)decided that they would measure a gig byte at 1000mb so therefore being able to say that a dvd capacity is 4.7 gig in actual fact there are 1024 mb to a gig byte , which makes a discs capacity a true 4.38 gig or there abouts
well said gurnard.. @movies27 - - that second line is the key here, 4450MB is way, way too close to outer edge. that figure in most ppl's logfiles is 4465MB maximum by default. i permanently stick to 4300MB as it's just not worth the risk, yet i only use top notch media and i still don't venture near the edge of discs. the underside of dvd media is far too fragile/easily scratched as it is..burning close to the edge is just asking for grief
thanks for your input creaky & gurnard..i will take that into consideration in the future if i ever experience any problems...but i guess i'm lucky so far as i have a few hundred discs done at 4464mb...
@movies27 Sorry it took me awhile to get back to this post. Hey, to each his own on settings and what works. We all do things for various reasons. You my friend like living on the edge.. If you get no problems, then you are truely blessed by the Burn Gods. I have learned to be more conservative in my settings when burning DVDs, and to live with the cost, which is only time in this case. The rewards are 100% success rate if i stick to my own rules. Yeah, burning at 4x isn't risky, or exciting, but you get good results. Kinda like the tortus and hare story. Both of my burners can do 16x but now i feel like i am pushing it if i go 6x. I've burnt movies at 8x and had no problems, but using good media helps mucho. Many of my movies were set to the same default setting as yours, but after reading about edge burning issues, i changed my shrink setting to Custom>4300. Those older copies set at 4464 still work fine. Have you tried a DL disk yet? It is sooo great to see a large movie, extras and all, get 100% no compression in shrink. Yes, the price is still high for media, and you need a DL capable burner, you also should only burn DLs at 2.4x {and i thought 4x was slow~ } , but prices are coming down for DL media. I know you didn't talk about burning fast, i just threw that in there as a general comment. I haven't noticed any great difference in picture quality or movie compression by going to the 4300 setting. You can usually either re-author, or de-select languages to get a movie to fit in shrink on most movies out there. Good luck, and happy burning!
