I've got a xvid movie file on my desktop,it's details are as follows
    696 mb
    1hr 31m run time
    w592 pixels
    h368 pixels

I've got DVD shrink but can't do anything with it as it does not recognise the file.
I've tried through Nero to compress the movie but nothing. It transcodes ok and when you go to burn it, that will go through but near the very end just before burning finishes , I get a dialogue that says 'there is not enough space available to complete the operation'
The disk I am using are just the normal 4.7gb dvd-r ones and have had various attempts at burning but still get the same error.
Have also tried other makes of dvd-r but same result
    Appreciate any replies!

To simply burn all that is required is a 700MB CDR. You are talking about converting though, which is ok, you just need to use the correct bitrate so that after converting and authoring it isn't too big.

DVD Shrink should work fine if you mean after you have converted to DVD video (still better to get the bitrate right in the first place). It won't work on the avi and even if it did, it wouldn't help since you are only going to then re-encode it.

So basically,I just forget burning to DVD-r and just put the file onto a cd-r ?
Once it is onto the cd-r, I presume it would play ok on our home dvd player, which supports quite a few formats?

Also once onto cd-r I could then transfer it to a DVD-r ?

Sorry to be a bit vague, but have not come across these XVID files before.
