Hi there i have an external philips dvd writer. I have been burning both cd's and dvd's for some time now. All of the sudden i try to go burn a CD today and wen i click burn it says "disc burner or software not found" when using itunes. With windows media player it just says "connect burner." Ive tried unplugging and plugging the drive, restarting my computer. What shall i do now?

Have you checked "devise manager" to see if there are any problems listed, or check the "event viewer" under "administrative tools" then "performance" tab? check them both and post back. See how you go.

Hi there, yes ive cheked device mangaer and there is a yellow explanation mark next to my sony cd/dvd ROM. I looked at the event viewer and there were some errors listed. The errors said, "the follwoing boot-start or system-start drivers failed to load" The following is a a list of them....
    AFD
    AvgLdx86
    AvgMfx86
    Cdrom
    Fips
    intelppm
    IPSec
    MRxSmb
    NetBIOS
    NetBT
    PxHelp20
    RasAcd
    Rdbss
    Tcpip

My advise would be to uninstall the drivers for the burner in "devise manager" then, without the drive plugged in, make a restart. Plug the drive back in and let windows make a driver as usual. The next step would be to re-scan your drives with your burning software (eg: Nero infotool). This is no guarantee, but it might solve the situation. How'd you go?

If possible, plug the drive into a different system (this is where mates come in handy) and if you get the same result at least you'll find out if the drive is kaput or not. If all is well with another machine, then I'm stumped why it won't work on yours.

At this point, I'd be thinking about viruses and other net nasties, but as this is highly unlikely it's just a simple fact that this external drive IS kaput. When you plugged this drive into your friends rig, was there ANY other message(s) that might indicate that not only was a driver being created, but other "things" being installed? Have you "flashed" this drive at all? Has this drive been altered by "a friend" at all? I can't see that your drive is a viral problem...at all. Please think back to when problems started with this drive AND what or where you were downloading from. If your drive has a warranty, please be cool and take/send it back and get a replacement item.

    Cheers.
