    I have a Lite-On SOHW-1633S.

And when I go to burn a DVD it only allows me to burn at a maximum speed of 4x, even though the DVD media allows me to go up to 8x. On the box it says I should be able to burn up to 8x/16x.

    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

what media are you using? that is PROBABLY the culprit right there...if you are using lower quality/poor quality dvd blanks, your drive will only burn at a set speed, not the rated speed of the disc...

also, what MIGHT be of some help, as i also have that drive too; is to update the firmware found here:

    http://www.liteonit.com.tw/ODD/WebFW/SOHW-1633S/DR16BS0Y.zip

it's brand new, MIGHT help in resolving the write strategies for that particular media...

Okay I'll try to flash it. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to flash it or not.

And the Media i'm using are Maxell 8x DVD+R and Maxell 8x DVD-R.
I don't remember the codes exactly but i know that +R are Ritek03 or something.

    Thanks!

    :)

try the flash and see how it goes...just might need sum update write strategies as the firmware "teaches" your drive how to perform with said media~ good luck

those Maxells are pretty good, i happen to have the MIJ (made in japan) Maxells, these are made by Hitachi, very good stuff...but, don't get me wrong, the RitekG05s (8x dvd-r) and the RitekR03s (8x dvd+r) are decent media and hold their own~

    docTY~
