I just recently bought a 120 gig external HD for my laptop and would like to use it for backing up movies. My problem is that my desktop has my dvd burner is about 4 years old and, has usb1, and only a PIII 600mhz. Will I be able to burn movies from this drive or will the transfer rate be slow? Sorry if this question has already been asked.

    thx

You will not be able to burn movies from the external drive at USB 1.1, even with a 1x burn. Does the drive support USB 2? If so, you could get a USB 2.0 add-in card for your system. They are relatively cheap these days, ~$20-30. If the drive doesnt support USB 2, I think you will be out of luck.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking about backing them up on the external and then transfering to the HD in my desktop as I burn them or would it not be worth the wait, i.e. fight club on external HD(usb2)transfer to desktop(usb1) and burn as usual. I have about 10 gigs free on my desktop just for this purpose. I figure it it will take me about 45min. a movie to do this. It takes me an hour or more to back up on my desktop while only 1/2 on laptop.
