Does anyone know if its possible to burn older 8x/12x CD-Rs in new drives, at 48x?! Does it work without any damage to the CD and/or drive? I've heard stories of exploding CDs when spun at too high a speed. Any ideas on this one?
It may be possible, but your chances of a bad burn are going to go way up. Most burners will read the ATIP on the disc and decide what speed to burn at which sometimes may be a bit higher than the rated speed but nowhere near a jump from 8X to 48X. You're best off to burn at the rated speed. High speed discs are so inexpensive these days it makes no sense to invite trouble. Discs shattering at high speed are rare. Just wear the safety goggles that came with your burner.
