Hello, I just bought the Plextor PX-708A 8X DVD Burner (4x DVD-R, 8X DVD+R) and I have a question here. I'm using Nero to burn my DVD after following the steps in the guides here but the only options for write speeds were 2x and 1x. My first thought was that this may be related to the media but no certified write speeds are listed on the packaging. Has anyone else experienced this? Also, my DVD player is about 5 years old (Sony DVP-S500D) so I'm hoping it will play these. Any info on this would be appreciated. I checked here, http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDnameid=430&Search=Search&#comments for compatibility issues but the results seem mixed. I'm burning my first DVD-R (Imation DVD-Rs) as well, so I'm hoping I don't end up with too many coasters.
The results do look mixed which perhaps indicates that the player is fussy about which media it will play. If there are no certified speeds written on the media then it wil be 1x or 2x which is what is being reported by Nero. You don't say what the media are. Looking at the comments for the standalone I'd go for some good quality +R discs (I don't use +R so I can't advise)
Thanks. I burned a test DVD-R and it works perfectly. I'll try a DVD+R next. Which seems to be the preferred format?? I'm not really sure what the difference is. As a side note, is there any indication of which format will eventually win out (or will one even win out over the others)?
