I have a Pioneer DVR-106 burner and I use Clone DVD. Everything worked fine until a couple of weeks ago. Now the burn process completes successfully but the disc is unreadable. The disc clearly has data on it but it cannot be accessed. It appears that some initial data about the disc is not there. Even in explorer it shows nothing on the disc.

I have replaced the burner and reinstalled the software but no help.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

    Hi Sjc038,
A few more things to try:
If you haven't already, try different media.
If you have WinXP, do a system restore to a time when things worked.

Try using this drive checking tool and lets see if we can eliminate your hardware as the source of this problem.

Do you have any other burning programs besides CloneDVD installed?

What OS are you using? What type and brand of media?
What are the specifications of your system? How do you have your drive(s) configured on your primary and secondary IDE channels?

Just trying to narrow things down a bit. More information would be most helpful.

Changing a drive for a typical burning problem is a bit drastic.

    Hi Frank.
Thanks for the info. I run XP home. I recently did a full reinstall to fix problems with my scanner. The CDR portion works. The problem is the DVD. I am using Memorex DVD+R. They worked fine until now. The player will burn files and audio ok. I domnloaded the program. Still cannot find the problem. I have no other software installed for burning. Clone DVD does not leave much room to screw up so I don't think it's that.

    Hi again sjc,
That narrowed it down, now we know your burner is connected correctly and that it can burn a data DVD and a CD. You have used InfoToolPro to check the drive's performance.

Memorex +R media is what I use, I have the same Pioneer drive also.

The problem may be in the programs you are using, your technique, or your source.

I have CloneDVD, so tell me, what program are you using to decrypt with?
Have you tried burning a different movie?

I use DVD Decrypter in file mode to decrypt the movie and then CloneDVD in the "clone DVD" mode to compress and burn. Is this what you are doing?

    Frank

    Franh.
I downloaded the DVD Decrypter and dectypted a DVD then used Clone to burn but had the same results. The disc was burnt but does not work. The computer shows it as blank. Could it be that the burning is too fast and how can I change the burn speed?

If you were using AnyDVD from slysoft with CloneDVD, that should work.
You did try your latest attempt with a different movie, right?
Try and use your media player to play the folder you ripped with Decrypter. (in file mode I hope)

Use the InfoProTool to check your source disc and your latest attempt for reading errors. Its the icon to the right of the RPM icon.
If you burn at to high of a speed and the disc is not written properly the tool should show that.

What media player do you have? Can you play the original disc on your computer? What does the copy do in a DVD player?

You are ending up with non DVD-Video compliant files on your disc, somehow. I think you would get an error message though. Are you using the "clone DVD" mode when using CloneDVD?

I don't want to tell you to download anything else yet, however a Nero demoversion and DVDShrink may be needed. These might be a bit more informative than CloneDVD as far as error messages go.

I'll go over some of the stuff I just mentioned and see if I can figure out anything else. It may be something obvious. Maybe media but I have never had a problem with Memorex +R discs.
I have to try and duplicate your process and see where errors can occur, a detailed description of what you are doing would be helpful.

    Frank.
I'm still working the problem. I uninstalled both Anydvd and Clone DVD and reinstalled. I successfully copied a DVD using these programs and a Memorex DVD+RW. I did not close Clone DVD but pressed write a second time and made another copy on a Memorex 4X DVD+R. This has unsuccessful with the same results as previous.

    sjc038,

When you uninstalled both Anydvd and Clone DVD and then reinstalled them, did you reboot the PC after the uninstall part, kind of to "clean" it out ? When installing your programs, did you again reboot after the installation to allow it to "take" ?

    Can't hurt, could help :)

    Hi ya "Fastman" -

    Hi guys,

So if I understand correctly you removed and reinstalled CloneDVD and AnyDVD then made a successfull burn.
The second attempt was made by selecting the write (go) button again after putting in a second blank disc. This attempt failed.

There is a box in the lower right corner of the CloneDVD output window, that says "delete temporary video files after writing".
Make sure this box is checked so that you don't end up putting the files for your second burn into a folder that already has files left from the previous burn.
They obviously don't get deleted unless the box is checked. I don't know if Clone gives an error message if there are files in this folder and a burn is attempted.

    Just a thought,
    Frank

Hi Pete, what do you think?

    Frank, Pete.
    Thanks for all the help.
I did restart between the removals and reinstallations. With the temporary files in Clone DVD I have the box checked to delete after the writing. In all cases Clone gives the "successful" message when complete. It is strange that it will copy on a DVD-RW.

If I decrypt a DVD, does XP have the facility to burn to a DVD?

    sic038,

XP is an operating system, no burner. However, there is windows media player which is bundled with it so you could use that to play DVD's. I don't care for it myself, it's not user friendly (at least for this user).

    Frank, Pete.
Thanks for your help. I think that I have fixed the problem. I updated all the BIOS (reflashed I guess it's called).I burnt 3 discs and all is well.
    Cheers.
    Simon.
