I've been burning a few dvd's from my hard drive lately and have been having a problem. These file sets are from torrent downloads. DVD's that I burn from the hard drive will not play in one of my dvd players. It says "disc read error. playback feature may not be available on this disc". They work perfectly in the other dvd player as well as on my pc. Any dvd's that I have copied from disc to disc work perfectly. Only dvd's that are burned from files on the pc cause this problem. The problem is not the media. I have used the same batch of media for the last few months with no problems. Again, the problem is only with these "burnt files". I have used Nero to burn the files as a DVD Video and I have also used DVD Shrink and used the "open File" option. I have the same problem either way. Could there be some sort of missing play file? Maybe the files aren't arranged correctly? Thanks for any help!!
Usually, these things are the fault of the media. It just takes trial-and-error to find a particular kind of disc your players like. It's best to use DVD-R, but you can use +R discs if you know they will be bitset to DVD-Rom (you can find out by finding if your writer supports bitsetting/booktyping for all types of +R media and that Nero actually does it). I recommend using quality media, either Verbatim or some kind of media that's made in Japan (MIJ). Also, if you are burning from Nero, you are aware that you should use the DVD-Video template from the startup wizard, right? You will have problems if you try to burn as a DVD-Rom.
I am more than certain that it is not the media. As I stated before, I have been using the same exact media for months. I might as well add that when burning DVD videos that have been decrypted to files, I have no problems playing them. It is only the torrent downloaded files that cause trouble. I honestly have never, ever, ever had a problem with burning, copying, decrypting, authoring or anything else DVD related for that matter. I only have trouble with the files I download from the torrent application. Every DVD (8 of them) that I have downloaded does the same thing. It works in one of my DVD players and my pc, but not in the other DVD player.
Try finding another program that can burn as DVD-video e.g. DVD Decrypter or IMGBurn. It's quite possible the IFO/BUPs from your downloads have errors or are non-standard, and your "non-working" DVD player doesn't know how to deal with them. The alternative is that you will have to try re-authoring the DVDs using the VOB files, essentially discarding the IFOs and BUPs supplied with your existing material.
