Buying a DVD burner

MacMall is selling an internal Pioneer A05 DVD-R/RW drive for $288. Good price so I did some research. The cheap 1X DVD media from GVP I want to use lists the A05 as compatible so that's good. Then at a price comparison site someone left a comments message warning not to buy the A05 until someone cracks the firmware code because it will not allow the drive to burn 2X or 4X cheap media. I really want this drive, so any comments on this will be greatly appreciated.

BTW, I emailed the maker of DVD Xcopy that the Mac community is drooling for this product and they said it is in development. I even suggested they call it DVD MacOSXcopy.

I bought one less than two months ago..

    I've burnt many 2x DVD's no problem.

I won't be upgrading my firmware atm though ;)

Thanks mike71. As long as what you burned was the cheap stuff, there's really no need to worry. My concern was based on a message I read here where someone was having a problem until they switched to the more expensive DVD media. I wasn't sure if that had anything to do with this firmware warning.

Eventually even the expensive media will plummet in price like the CDs did. So why worry, right?

    Glad you're optimistic.

I'm down under and bought laser branded DVD's. Their CD's down here were apparently shite.

I bought 20 for $54au and not one problem due to media [I did have one of the 20 burns fail but I changed my usual technique].

So I'm very happy, imation DVD's cost $12au each so even if the cheap media is not 100% it's still way cheaper overall.
