I own an NEC 3540A and love it, so I would definately give two thumbs up for that drive in your link. But my next drive will be a BenQ 1655, it has lightscribe capabilities and is a very good scanner. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827101006 Either of these two drives I think you would be more than happy with.
$36 along with free shipping: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827101010 That's the black oem benq 1650. Great booktyping drive. Faster burning? Yes-performs better with ty and verbatim at over 8x. High stand alone compatability rate? Yes-after booktyping the plus format to dvd-rom,which this baby will do! Reliability? Yes- Hard to kill a benq drive. Burn 20 dvds without powering down? Yes-Oh Yes! Coaster rate? Nope, very rarely get a coaster off of any 4 of my benqs. I avg 1 coaster per 500 backups, and usually it's a playback coaster. Noisy drive? Nope, mine is so quiet-I can't even hear it burning, and I have very good ears. Reader? It's an average reader. I use them for burning only. Firmware updates? Yes-they do update them very often. Qsuite? This program can set the booktype/has qscan to scan your blank dvds to see if it is safe to burn at certain speeds. Overburn protection-burns the media at the specified rating,no overburning. Solid burn-to properly burn your discs. Best burner for the buck. Got dual drives? Wait till you try ripping and burning on the fly with these babies!
thanks im gonna pick up benq 1650 a from newegg i was readin this thread http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2/318605 but im confused as to how u turn booktyping on i use dvd decrypter to burn iso/img
If you get the benq 1650,it should automatically booktype right out of the box. But a few members drives wouldn't until I had them download the qsuite 2.0 or 2.1 utility.Booktyping issue was solved with that very nice utility. Qsuite has some nice programs like: Qscan-scan your blank dvds at different speeds. It'll tell you if it can handle those speeds with a 2-3 min scan per speed rate you select. Booktyping- Sets the booktyping for Benq-1620/1640/1650/1655/and probably the 1670?. It should stay there once it has been set.Booktypes all plus format media: +r/+rw/+r DL all at the same time.No switching the settings if you change from any of the plus format discs. Mine don't tell me if it is actually booktyped, but dvdidentifier and dvdinfopro will tell you if they are actually booktyped. Solidburn: Controls how your burn to a particular MID code.It actually learns how to burn them properly. Overspeed: A very nice feature for single dvd-rw drive pcs.Benqs will overburn majority of the 8x media to 12x and 16x if the burn speed is left at max speed. This overspeed program limits the burn to what the media is specified. WOPC: Controls the laser's power to adapt to the condition of your blank media.
