make sure that it has the ability to booktype your discs to DVD-ROM

also get a drive that has easily upgradable firmware

I would recommend either a LiteOn or a BenQ drive ...

Ok i went and got a NEC external 3540 burner. I went with what the sticky said for good burners to get. The sticky said NEC could Booktype my DVD's. I hope I have choosen a good burner for starting out on making backups for my games, and movies. If any body has anything to ad about this burner it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for helping a NOOB!

I have a NEC, and it's been Burning DVD's for me for the longest. I have had no problem with it. Now the media on the other hand, be careful what you get. You buy cheap you get cheap.

OK so it looks like the NEC will work, now I just need to find the sticky for buying media. I also ordered a swap majic 3.6 flip top for the old PS2. We'll I geuss I better start practicing burning so I don't make a bunch of coasters.

in terms of media...i can give you 3 names that you will simply love with your new NEC...

    1. Taiyo Yuden (found online @ supermediastore.com, rima.com- for the best pricing and AUTHENTIC Taiyo Yudens...also found in local stores under the Fujifilm/Sony brand names, BUT, must look for the "made in japan" on the spindle in the 8x dvd+r format for this to hold true, if you get the "made in taiwan", you did NOT get Taiyo Yudens...ALL TYs-taiyo yuden- are MADE IN JAPAN)

    2. Verbatim (found locally at bestbuy, officedepot, compusa, staples, etc...just look for the sales, all these are gonna be "made in taiwan" with the exception of the dvd+r DL Verbs which are "made in singapore" )

    3. Maxell (make sure you get the Hitachi made ones..."made in japan" again on the spindle, make sure to look carefully and these are also very high quality media)

good luck...as long as those 3 are available...you need not look any further for "good quality media"....

p.s. ONE word of advice...[bold]STAY THE HELL away from TDK[/bold], Memorex, HP, Philips, Imation, and any other "store brand" crap discs with the exception of OfficeDepot's own store brand in the 8x rated speed, either format...those are Ritek made and very decent...

    docTY~
