I'm a nerdy newbie here, I arrived here through googling. I've asked this question on Livejournal & in other forums I frequent & I keep getting different answers. I wasn't sure of where to put this question, I'm sure it'll take me while to get a hang of how things run around here. I apologize immensely if this question has been asked a billion times, I did try using the search feature.

I'm buying a new computer from Dell & I want to be able to burn DVDs & CDs. Can I just get a DVD burner or do I need a CD burner too? These are the options dell.com has:

    - Single Drive: 16X DVD-ROM Drive
    - Single Drive: 48x CD-RW Drive [add $20]
    - Single Drive: 48X CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive [add $40]
    - Single Drive: 16X CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) w/double layer write capability [add $70]
    - Dual Drives: 16x DVD-ROM Drive + 48x CD-RW Drive [add $59]
    - Dual Drives: 16x DVD-ROM Drive + 16x DVD+/-RW w/dbl layer write capability [add $119]
    - Dual Drives: 48x CD-RW Drive + 16x DVD+/-RW w/dbl layer write capability [add $139]

Thank you very much for reading this!

    "Single Drive: 16X CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) w/double layer write capability [add $70]"

    This one should do both.

all of the recent dvd burners out there WILL burn cds as well as dvds~ at least from dell, you would be fine with just a single dvd burner, but, may opt for the 2 optical drive setup (ie. dvd-rom and dvd burner) for faster ripping and less wear and tear on your dvd burner drive.

but to answer your initial question, yes...it will do both~ :)
