I live in Michigan and I have Charter Cable service. I have two HD TV's and one of my TV's has a DCX3400 HD Receiver with DVR. My second HD TV doesn't use a cable box receiver, instead I just have the cable plugged straight into the TV.

Now my question is can I purchase any DCX3400 HD Receiver and use it on my second HD TV in my house or do need I have to get it through my Cable provider(Charter) ??

    Thanks,
    Kris

you need to ask your provider for a multi-room option

I'm sure they could provide me with one for an additional fee, but what if a friend has one that isn't being used and will give it to me. Can I use it so I can avoid paying for that additional box from my provider?

not possible friend. without doubt there are alternatives but on the most basic level you cannot use an unsubscibed box in a multi-room environment. you can check alternatives such as using dreambox to replace your current box but for many it is inconvenient and time consuming
