can only burn 12x and 16x

    i was always able to burn at 4x or 8x

    now with nero or image burn i can only burn at 12x or 16x

    burner going bad ?
    even at 16x read errors

    It won't let you change the write speed, or you set the write speed at 4x in ImgBurn, but it insists on burning at maximum?

    no. i can set it at 4x or 8x but wont burn . i get write retries

    will burn at 12x and 16x tho

    lazer needs cleaned ?

    At a very quick glance I would go with http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106050 . It's got a 4 egg average with 100+ ratings. On second though if you need a sata compatible drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106070

    Are you sure you need sata?

    Are you sure your drive is gone? I would try to uninstall it in device manager and reboot and see if that helps. After then uninstall/reboot make sure DMA is turned back on. If your lost google device manager and google or search this site on how to turn DMA on.
