my (orginal) xbox recently died and i was wondering if i could open it and remove the HDD and put it into a different working xbox unit -or do i need to have it softmodded or chipped inorder to do this? thanks.
simply put you can't do that. The xbox hard drive and motherboard are a pair. What makes them a pair is called the eeprom. The eeprom is a code that unlocks the hard drive when the xbox boots. Each xbox and motherboard have their own unique eeprom. If you put the hard drive from another xbox in a different xbox it will boot with an error 6 (xbox can not unlock the hard drive). If you could unlock the hard drive and lock it with the eeprom from that xbox it would work. There's a thread that's pretty active, that deals with this issue. here's a link for you http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/357863
