    Hello everybody,
    I got a big problem with my MS driver:HL-DT-ST-DVD-RW GWA-4040N (version 5.1.2535.0) my laptop is running Windows XP SP2;

    first I could read both CDs and DVDs, but only burn CDs,not DVDs;
    then, after a while I could read CDs and DVDs, but not burn anything;
    next I could only watch DVDs (no listening to CDs, no burning anything);

    since yesterday the driver is disabled (not my doing) and Windows cannot enable device - code 22.
    How can I again enable my disc drive??
    Please help!

    (I also have some viruses that Windows live security cannot clean up, maybe it has something to do with it? if not, then I hope to deal with this later)

    I should add that my computer knowledge is very basic at best and I'll greatly appreciate any help!

    Hi first try to enable the device manually.

    Click on start>right click on my computer>click on properties>click on hardware>click on device manager>click on ide ata/atapi controllers/then right click on the ide channel and choose uninstall driver.

    When you do this you will be asked to restart you laptop.

    When you do this this should reinstall the drivers and enable the device.

    Also when you go though the instructions above check if there is a yellow triangle next to the device, if so click on and go through the troulbe shooter.

    Hope this helps

    thank you nemo 101; unfortunately cannot uninstall, because I misplaced all my Win discs, so I don't have the software to install again.

    I have meanwhile done something: I went to system restore (as far back as Win would allow me, which is April) and restored my previous settings, and now Windows recognizes the CD-Rom again, it lets me play DVDs again, but I cannot play audio CDs (or burn anything).
    Any ideas on how to approach this?
    Or does somebody know how to do system restore farther back???
    Thanks for all your help!
