After I burn a DVD (successfully) I then try to read it and my machine acts like there is no CD in the drive at all.

I am running Windows XP Pro. I am using an Optorite DVD+RW DD1205

I am using Nero 7.0.1.4 and DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0. Neither have worked.

The media I am using is Memorex 16x DVD-R's

I have also tried using different media. I went out and bought FUJIFILMS DVD+R's and then whent hose didnt work I returned them for DVD-R's and those did not work either. I returned them for Memorex since I have never had a problem with them before.

I have upgraded my Firmware to 120e. Then I tried installing Nero 6. That did not work, so I installed Nero 7. I have also installed Adaptec ASPI, when that did not work, I tried the ForceASPI18. That did not work either.

My burner worked fine, then I ended up formatting a few weeks ago, now I am having issues.

Sometimes I can take a burned DVD and put it in my other PC and it will read it after about 30-60 seconds and sometimes it will not read it. Same goes with my main that I burned it from.

Even when I put in an old DVD I have burned from before I formatted it sometimes takes forever for it to read, if it does read it. And yes the media was different. Both Memorex, but different. But I have the same problem with one of my old Memorex DVD-R's that I burned after I formatted.

Also, I took a DVD-R over my buddies house and he burned a Movie on to it for me and then I put it in my PC and it worked fine. I could also read the DVDs I burned on his PC.

This is my old Memorex DVD-R's

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Memorex are the WORST possible disc you can use. A poor quality dye is used in their processing and this leads to inconsistencies in the discs.
Many a thread has covered the woes of using Memorex discs. I dont think the Fuji is top quality but will stand corrected. Any CMC mag discs are to be avoided.

Most members recommend Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden and to burn at a slow speed of 4X.

Is this bad dye behind the fact that I can burn successfully and then sometimes be able to read the dvd and sometimes not?

I am pretty certain that your problems ARE caused by the media you are using. Beg, steal or borrow a Verb or Taiyo Yuden, try again and see if you problem is not resolved, chances are THEY WILL BE

I have used 4 different types.. all with the same outcome. I have used two didnt Memorex DVD-Rs and FUJIFILMS DVD-R and DVD+R. But I will ask a friend for another. I just find it hard to believe that 4 different DVDs are giving me the same problem and that they are all bad media. Even when the manuf. I am using now is classified 2nd rate (Ritek).
