I have a softmodded xbox with the Evox dashboard and under the main menu there is the option to go to MS Dashboard. When I click it it gives me the xbox service screen. I've read a few threads and tried using boxexplorer to execute xboxdash.xbe from my C drive but the screen just stays black. So far the softmod looks and behaves normally except for this error when I click go to MS Dashboard. I'm afraid of removing softmod to redo it only to find I have a corrupt MSDash and all the other tiresome stuff. I'm just trying to get to MS Dash so I can run the setup cd for the xbox wireless adapter. When I run the cd, I guess it tries to check the msdash and it fails. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm curious if the best course of action is to ftp and replace the entire C directory? Or when I'm clicking "Go to MS Dash" is it possible that it's not pointing to the right file?
Not sure I follow but if you want the MS Dash and are set-up for duo boot, turn it on using the eject button when the system is off?
Thanks, I think I installed using single boot option with the slayers install disk. This is my second xbox install and I remember being able to get to ms dashboard last time using single boot install. Does this make sense?
Edit: weird can't edit my post but I just ran up and tried turning on the machine by eject only and it goes straight to the Evolution dashboard.
Sounds like you can't use the eject button, A lesson for next time. You could go into a file manager and select it from there. In the C drive if I am not mistaken?
Thanks I tried launching xboxdash.xbe in my C drive from boxExplorer, filemanager in XBMC and one of the filemanagers in my softmod menu. The result is it either stays as a blank screen or 90% of the time I get the xbox service error screen. I even tried running xboxdash.xbe in my E:\Backup\ folder and got the same error. That is the reason I'm very worried about restoring the backup, it could be a corrupted file. The weird thing is in my C: drive there's also a xb1xdash.xbe file, but that doesn't work either. Right now, everything is fine and I still have ftp access so I'd like to try to fix it properly as opposed to screwing up the harddrive and losing ftp access.
Alright don't ask me why but i've spent the last hour messing around with the msdash for you. Here's the trick After you download my file open it you will see MSDASH. Inside will be 4 folders and 4 files. You need to copy these files directly to your C:. You should back up your C: first just incase one of these files overwrites something important. It shouldn't overwrite anything important because it all pertains to the msdash but back it up just incase. After copying these files over load boxplorer and select msdash.xbe. You should be taken directly to the msdash. If it doesn't work let me know and we'll figure this out. http://rapidshare.com/files/107909441/MSDASH.rar.html
oh man, well here's the part where I sit here and kick myself in the butt for having no patience!!! Anyways I guess I got ahead of myself being a little frustrated and I did what any noob would do. Anyways, I followed the thread on how to restore everything back to retail, ftp'd into my box, overwrote the C drive with a good ms dash and rebooted. (also I did edit the evox.ini file because for some reason it was pointing to the xb1xdash.xbe) So xbox turned on great, MS Dash 5960, sweet, then I went to check my network settings and boom! Xbox service error? Now I've got a retail Xbox that periodically gives me a service error screen ONLY when I pick the network settings, none of the other options give me any trouble at all. Retail games worked fine, but when I put in the MN-740 installer, it gave me the same error as well. I put in the AID disk just for fun and it complained that it wasn't a game/audio disk Anyways when I tried to run the linux installer from splinter cell, it tries to load the file and white screen then restarts the game and I tried to load it like 10 times but it keeps restarting with the Ubisoft logo. I appreciate the help and wish I had waited just a little sooner. Now have I gone past the point of no return? But at least I did backup everything in my C and my E before I overwrote my C drive.
Wow your as bad as that guy that can't use the map pack installer. LOL Anyway do you still have your eeprom.bin file? If you do you can unlock your drive then use xplorer 360 to edit the files on the unlocked hd. Just put everything back the way it was and relock the drive.
lol ownage, thanks, I should have the eeprom.bin, yea I'm away from home at school and the only desktops available to me only have a sata port so hopefully i'll have some time by the weekend. Thanks for the help, I'll update when I get started on the harddrive lock.
alright, you can also hotswap to do it instead of using the eeprom.bin file, but it's a lot more risky. I never liked the thought of moving somthing spinning at 7200rpm.
Update: Okay so here we go again, so I got my hands on another XBOX that my friend and I had partially modded, same deal with the EvoX dashboard, XBMC works great, emulators worked great. So I tried using it to go to MS Dashboard, and no go, service error. I pop in the MN-740 setup disk and it complains about the disk being dirty and either way I can't access MSDASH. So I really hate the fact that I may be asking to be spoonfed here, but I've done the reading and I already screwed up one try to put things back to retail so I'm gonna hope that asking questions is the safer route. How do I go back to factory state? From here I think I should be able to install this blasted MN-740 adapter. Then I will softmod with the dual boot option. (I think for both xboxes, I did single boot and that's probably what's not allowing me to access ms dash anyways) My last xbox, I already tried rewriting the C with a fresh copy of 5960 dashboard. It did get rid of the softmod, but it then gave me xbox service errors when I tried networking settings/xbox live. As well with this xbox I am unable to load the linux installer to get ftp access. I read people using slayer's cd to restore, but I want to make sure that a working copy of ms dash is available with it because it seems my backed up copies just give me an xbox service error everytime I try to run xboxdash.xbe. Thanks for the help so far.
Slayers evox 2.7 is not for softmodding if that is what you used and is why you referenced slayers in your last post? What if you try to load SID 4 over your softmod and select duo boot according to the tutorial posted here?
Bummer, I only mentioned Slayers because I saw that it offers an auto method for restoring the XB retail HD to factory mode. In the past I've always used SID to softmod and AID/FTP to add apps. So what is the proper way to re-run SID on a softmodded xbox. Do I format? Or do I just select dual boot? I only worry about about dual boot because I'm afraid my version of msdash is corrupted. I don't know if SID installs it's own version of msdash or reuses what's on C:
Not sure, but when I re ran the 007 exploid to get my eeprom location, it just fired up like a normal softmod. I am curious if the required ms files are on the softmod installer package and if so, you don't need your ms files. Come to think of it, what softmod program did you use and does it have the option to install the box back to ms dash? Check links here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/400161 http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/xbox-support/77588-original-ms-dash-back.html
Well, had a good chat c4rn1 and he hooked me up with some great files and things are doing great. I guess my initial problem got alot more complicated but here's the summary, the sad thing is my trouble aren't over but at least I'm alot more confident now in the whole softmod Xbox thing. Xbox1: Loads avalanche dash, backups, XBMC and emulators work great. I can access MS Dash. Existing issues: Clicking network settings on MSDash loads Avalanche? As a result I am still unable to setup my MN-740 adapter. I'm looking for a way maybe through dash/xbmc/app to setup connection to SSID + WEP password. Xbox2: Xbox plays retail games only, loads MS Dash (I ftp'd the Mik3h C) but when I try network settings/Xbox Live I get FRAG'd. Running linux installer on Splinter cell does not work as game restarts everytime after I press "Checkpoints"; as a result I don't have ftp access. This is an amazing board and I think over time, I'm sure I'll get both of these perfect.
How are you getting on now? I noticed you mentioned you edited your evox.ini file because it was pointing to xb1xdash.xbe; do you know that file is the re-named MS Dash? SID makes a copy of the original and changes its name, I think this has to do with xbox live, google it.
