Have been using DVD Shrink and Nero 7 to write to Tesco 8x 4.7gb DVD +R with no problem at all. However now if I try I get an error and the backup fails. I have tried using Kodak 4x 4.7gb DVD +RW and it works fine. I thought the problem was caused when the PC updated to XP Service Pak 3 but I removed it and it didn't make any difference.
    Any help would be appreciated.

This version is full of bugs, uninstall, run this clean tool
http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/Nero7_CleanTool.html and then install this version 7.10.1.0 from here
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_nero_7_premium/?2893

DMA needs to be on, heres a guide to turn back on

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038

You have a lot of memory in use, dont multitask while burning.

Try using good quality discs such as Verbatim or Sony (made in Japan) and burn at 4X

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I tried several times to install the version of Nero you mentioned but it failed each time saying there was a file missing. I reinstalled the old version as this had worked previously and tried turning DMA back on as per the instructions and now the log file says
DiskPeripheral : ST380011A atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On
    CdRomPeripheral : HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4481B atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: On
CdRomPeripheral : HP DVD Writer 1040d atapi Port 1 ID 1 DMA: Off

I cannot seem to get DMA on for the HP DVD Writer permanently so I wonder if there is something wrong with the system. Also I have no other applications running so the heavy use of memory is a mystery to me.

Looks like I'll have to continue to use +rw disks.

Have you checked the cables to and from that particular drive?

Surfing the web, internet radio, etc. can also hog up your memory.

Why don't you just dump Nero completely and burn with ImgBurn and better quality media as mentioned by Gwendolyn? I have Nero Ultra 7.10.10 on my PC and I can't remember the last time I even thought about using the overrated, bloated ...er, keepsake. 486 mb. of dead weight. HeHe.
