Argh! I have a plextor 708A burner 2 months old with the latest firmware off their site. (1.06) Was burning flawless with some Accu brand DVDs at 2x-R or Philips brand at 2.4X+R using Nero 6.3.1 and all updates of it. But I can't find a faster disk speed to burn: Tried TDK 8x+R, Verbatim, 8x+R, Imation 4X+R, Fuji 4X-R, Memorex 4X-R. Nero says it is burning at the designated speed, but it always burns slower than 2x (Takes an hour to burn a disc) What is the deal? It can't be the media, can it? Is it my burner? Should I go back to previous firmware? Call plextor? Should I be using a different burning program like Copy2DVD? Help!
Is the Plextor set to DMA? Sounds like it may have been kicked down to PIO. http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/IDE-DMA.mspx Sometimes it helps to uninstall the drive through Device Manager, reboot, then let windows find and reinstall the drive.
Go to Device manager> IDE ATAPI controllers> Check the 1st and secondary IDE controller. One at a time, please. This is how. Double clickthe 1st IDE controller now under the advanced tab. Be sure the transfer mode is at DMA if available. If not, change it to that. Do the same for the 2nd controller. Then reboot. If this doesnt change the transfer mode, then you will have to uninstall the IDE controllers. Right click the IDE controller and left click uninstall. You can do this for both. Then reboot. Xp will automatically reinstall them and this should fix the slow burn issue.
My thanks to Nephilim and 321sucker. I had a similar issue with transfer from a DVD rom. As it turns out, that device had been kicked down to PIO. Too much stability has poisoned me from the root issues!
