Hi. I cannot install anything except windows 98, windows xp and 2000 just freezes after the blue screen after booting and reading all the files and says setup is starting windows. I tried to install linux but it just load some files and crash and restarted automotically. I was thinking this could be a bios issue maybe i have to upgrade it, but have no idea how to know which model i have. When i turn it on it says Compaq and im not running any os right now cant seem to find my 98 install disk... Anyone have any ideas....
    thx

the computer probably doesn't meet the minimum requirements of XP. what are the actual system specs?

well, if you're sure your ram is seated properly and all the hardware is in proper working condition, i would say you're just not doing enough of a low-level format. is the XP you're trying to install the upgrade or the full version?

I have had problems with windows XP when changing hardware, but it sounds like you have formatted it already.

You could try a memory diagnostic, Microsoft have one Windows Memory Diagnostic

Otherwise try installing with the basics attached to the pc like just one cd-rom and the hard drive

    What motherboard?

Feed us all you can about everything you have...having us guess is just wasting your time in getting things going.
