Okay, I tried installing CCCP to play .mkv files. Then I try to open an AVI file- fail. No picture. Not even an area of greyness in the middle of the screen. Just black. No sound. I install K-lite Codec pack which allows me to play .mkv But still no AVi, with the same symptoms. I download DivX Codec. Still the same symptoms. I download XviD with the same symptoms...

The file I'm trying to open is City of Men[2007]DvDrip[Portuguese]-FXG

    Any help would be appreciated.

According to the torrent notes, it uses the xvid codec.

    Download gspot http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

Open the avi file with this tool and post the result in this forum.

Okay....it plays it without sound in its tiny frame. It says: Status: Codec installed for both Audio + video. But when I go to file play with associated player I get the same results. Boo hoo:(

Download the VLC player. Does it play in there?

The point about Gspot is that it may help to diagnose your existing problem...

This is the third time I mentioned it.
Open the file in Gspot and see what it says about rendering the file.
