Windows XP has always had serious issues when dealing with AVI files. Some have had to unregister related DLL files in order to keep them from locking up, or crashing Explorer. However...one of the ways I've found to keep Windows happy, and running ... is to associate AVI files with QuickTime. Or the QT Alternative.
