when i click start>shutdown>shutdown on my windows xp home pc nothing happens. the box that pops up for shutdown goes away but no hour glass or nothing. same thing for restart. but i can go into standby with no problems. anyone know how to fix this prob? {i have an emachine, 512 ram, Pentium 4 150gb HD} for now im using a batch file to shutdown, but can anyone help with the shutdown buttons? thanks
The problem most likely exists because a program or driver does not want XP to shut it down. You'll have to go thru a process of elimination to find which one it is. Or, you could try this registry tweak: Go to start, run, type in regedit Go to the following key: HKEY_Users\.Default\Control Panel\Desktop Look on the right for an entry called AutoEndTask, right click, Modify, change the 0 to a 1. Exit registry editor. Press CTRL ALT DEL, find explorer in the Processes tab. Click on it, End Process..then wait a second, then go to File, New Task and type in explorer. That will refresh the registry. Try shutting it down again.
