    Hey everyone

I've had some movies that I really want to take some clips from but I'm having so much difficulty. I've tried doing this with multiple programs (ie. X Video converter, Movie Splitter, etc) and all of these programs have done the same thing: I can load the video and put my start&end points in and as soon as I begin to split the file the programs crash and want to send an error report to M$. I've tried finding info on this and it seems others have had this happen before however in the forums I've looked at no one has yet gave a solution.

I found a guide on here on how to split avi files with virtualdub so I tried following that. I still wasn't able to do it but VD gives me an error at least.

Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XVID' (unknown)

VD requires a Video for Windows compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by WMP, are not suitable.

What the hell does this mean? I'm assuming that this is also the reason why the other programs just crash on me. Can someone provide a translation to this message here? thanks.

It means you need to install XviD or at least something that can handle decoding it like ffdshow.

ok now I already have ffdshow installed but it's this one ffdshow-20041012. I'm assuming then the problem is that this version is out of date. By installing the new ffdshow-20051027 this should fix the problem?

There was a problem with the installer with 20041012. On NT based systems it doesn't correctly install for VfW. If you were to manually change ffdshow's vidc registry from program files to progra~1 and make sure that ffdshow was set to handle XviD decoding via VfW then it would work.

With 20051027 you just need to make sure that XviD is set to libavcodec in the VfW decoder config.

    Damn this is impossible!

I installed ffdshow-20051027 and I get the same damn results with virtual dub!

Now in reading your response...I see some things in the startmenu under ffdshow. There's the audio decoder, VWF codec, and video decoder. Am I supposed to mess with the settings in here?? I open this program and I'm totally lost. It's like reading Chinese or Arabic to me.

Anyways, you said With 20051027 you just need to make sure that XviD is set to libavcodec in the VfW decoder config.

well when I go into the VfW codec configuration I don't see Xvid in the drop down box. I see MPEG4 for the encoder and beside it in the FOURCC I can set it to a bunch of options. XviD is one of those options. That's already set when I open the movie file.

If I go into the video decoder in the list of all these codecs I see Xvid at the top of the list in the format coloumn, then in the decoder section it says libavcodec whateve rthe hell that means, and in the supported coloumn it says Xvid, Xvix. There are many others in here that have libavcodec beside them too.

I don't know...I'm at a loss on how to get this working. I know nothing about codecs and this ffdshow thing is confusing as hell. I just want to find out how to solve this problem. If you can provide info or point me in some direction that would be awsome. I find this whole codec thing so frustrating.

When you go into the VfW settings you will be in the encoder settings (left tab), you need to be in the decoder settings (right tab).
The video decoder settings are for direct show which as the origianl error stated are not suitable.

As a side note, if you have XviD installed then it will show up as an option for compression in ffdshow. You can also set XviD to XviD for decoding. libavcodec is an opensource library for various media formats including MPEG-4. Setting ffdshow to libavcodec means that it uses libavcodec for decoding.

    Hey how's it going?

I did what you said there and I was able to get rid of that error when trying to open the video files in VD. Thanks.

Now something else happened. I've only tried one file so far, but when I opened this movie file I was trying to remove a clip from I got this error

---VD has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source AVI file and will rewrite the audio header with standard CBR values duing processing for better compatibility. This may intorduce up to 5648 ms of skew from the video stream. If this is unacceptable, decompress the *entire* audio stream to an uncompressed WAV file and recompress with a constant bitrate encoder. (bitrate: 114.2 +or- 8.8kbps.)---

I've tried reading the documentation in VD and looking for some posts as well. So far nothing. Do you know why this is happening, and more importantly how I can fix it? I tried splitting the clip anyways and of course the audio was out of sync by about 3 seconds or so.

Almost got this problem resolved :) Thanks again for all your help.

You either need to follow the advice or use VirtualDubMod instead since it can handle VBR audio.

Well I tried looking for an option to decompress the audio like it said to do but obviously I failed because I don't know enough of this program. Isn't there one simple program that will split a video clip and will do everything automatically? This project I wanted to do suddenly seems like it's more hassle than it's worth! What method do you use when trying to split a clip? Maybe your method is way easier than this.

    Did you try VirtualDubMod?
