I have a problem. I inadvertently sent some important system files to the recycle bin. Now I can only get as far as seeing the background when I start my computer. I have tried system restore but it does not help. If I could find a way to open my recycle bin through the task manager or DOS mode I think I could restore the files and everything would be back to normal. I would appreciate help from anyone.
The only thing I can suggest is this, try booting in safe mode with command prompt, and log in as Administrator. Then in your command prompt window go to C:\Recycler If you can see the files there try to copy them to where they need to be, the only way to access recycle bin is with explorer running, so you may go ahead and try to access task manager and run explorer, see if you can get it up.
but if you deleted the system files you are in trouble because windows xp is in the ntsf partition and even if you get in in safe mode using last good configuration it still wont boot because you need the system files
I appreciate everybody's help but I think I will have to reinstall everything. I tried the last known good configuration and the same thing happened. I will have to start over. I will know not to delete files I shouldn't next time.
Wait don't just reformat. Just do a repair install or do a full reinstall on top of your old windows directory. It should work out fine and everything should work normally after that.
