First of all let me say that this forum is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I'm no expert but I'm learning more each time I read these forums. I was making several home movies a while back and when I got ready to burn, my burner wouldn't burn with dvd-r's. No problem with the +r's. I even tried to several different brands with no luck. I've even tried to make dvd copies with the -r's (no luck)then again no problem with the +'s. I'm ignorant with this but could it have something to do with the firmware? The burner is supposed to burn dvd-r's. I've got a stack of -r's and can't use them. Thanks in advance

    Hi gr8mpg
Problem could be due to the firmware. Best to keep it up to date. One thing it can do is help the drive recognize media and use the correct write strategy esp. w/ newer media.
The latest for the NEC is 1.04.
    Here's a link:
    http://support.necam.com/Optical/downloads/FlashFirmware/

Another reason may be the media you are using - which brands are you using for -R's?

Good to hear the aD has helped you out!

binkie 7: The only -r media I can find right now is Memorex 8x. I've tried others but I can't locate them. Thanks for the NEC site. I can find the proceedure for firmware update but can't download anything. My burner is the slave and the proceedure says that if it is the master, then the slave has to be disabled. So I guess I leave it enabled. Just to make sure and to find out why I can't download the f/w update, I'm going to call tech sup. when everybody on the west coast wakes up this morning. Another question: If I'm copying a +r from my dvd rom drive to the NEC (with a -r) will it work? or will I have to use the same media in both drives? I don't remember if I had tried this or not but just curious. Thanks

binkie7: My bad. Duh--I didn't go to the bottom of the page and "accept". That gives you the link to download. + I will have to make the NEC the primary to be able to download the f/w. It's risky to update f/w (what everyone has advised) but I need to learn how to do it. Thanks

    hey gr8mpg
No if copying from a +R you don't need another +R to copy too. Either format is fine as long as your drive supports them (which yours does).

Memorex doesn't always use the best manufacturers so that might be part of your problem. Better to use would be Verbatim or made in Japan Sony, Fuji or Maxell.

You should be good on the firmware update - risky somewhat but not that bad.
How'd you make out on it?

    edit: spelling

I have an NEC 3540a and use modified firmware..version 1.WB (RPC1) from here:

    http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/3540/

you will also need the BinFlash Win32 GUI version 1.33 from here:

    http://binflash.cdfreaks.com/

I've flashed this drive several times with no ill effect. The modified firmware will 1 - Remove Riplock for faster ripping speeds 2 - Make your drive Region free and 3 - Allow for bitsetting/booktyping.

    Enjoy!

Thanks folks! The flash did great. I talked to the tech. guy about an old problem that reappeared; every time I put in a movie (in the nec) I would get the dreaded blue screen (dumped). I redid some of my configurations + I had to delete some of the leftover nero stuff which conflicted with roxio (which i would also like to get rid of). I keep roxio just for the soundwave program. Very little else works in it and none of the photo stuff works. Would get Nero but folks have problems with it too. (any suggestions?)
My NEC works on everything now & will try the other flash just mentioned. You guys saved me a LOT of trouble.

Good to hear your back on track :)

Give Nero another go - it's not that bad :). Sounds like you have it uninstalled - might just want to try their clean tool also for the version you had. Here are some links:
    http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/Clean_Tools.html

Now install Roxio and use the clean tool- roxio zap:
    http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml

If you had Nero 7 you can install the newest from their website - 7.5.7.0.
If you had Nero 6 use these links for 6.6.0.18:
    Package 1

    Package 2 (recode & vision)

Locoeng: I have a few questions before I flash again (with binflash): 1-The NEC flash instructions say if you have "Intel ultra ATA storage driver" to uninstall before flashing. In dev. manager, mine says "controller" instead of "driver". Do I leave this alone? 2-Also it says to disable the slave driver, leave alone? The instructions for Binflash doesn't mention any of these items. 3-In Binflash what do I do with the Booktype button-is it set automatically? The instructions seem pretty straight forward. Thanks

I don't have Intel ultra ATA storage drivers that I know of...if I do I didn't disable it when I flashed. If you have them might be a good idea to follow the instructions in the readme.

That is just a precaution, I left my config as is when flashing my NEC...BenQ went unaffected and the NEC flash was smooth.

You can permanantly set the booktype with binflash for your NEC, pretty cool feature.
