are the 2 boxes side by side any chance
reason i ask that is you could be knocking off 1 box when turning on the other by remote controle

also is both boxes for the same tv?

sounds like your cable signal is not strong enough check you cable connections and if needed buy a booster for your cable

i know it could be done with the boxes a few year ago
cos when we got ntll in first whatever we watched downstairs was on the tv upstairs
and we only had 1 box, as far as i can remember it was done with the cable output port
tune your tv in to the channel and wallah we were a happy family, lol
same way you used to tune in the old vcr
wonder if that can stil be done!
