This is a question I couldn't find an answer to in the forums. I have an HP7170NP computer with a Hauppauge capture card. The problem is that the software that came with the computer doesn't do a good job of capturing; in fact about as good a job as the Tech Support I've been talking to.

My question: Does anyone know of a good software that captures in MPEG?

Go to the hauppauge website and download WinTV2000.
    It should work.
Failing that, try GotAllMedia, GB-PVR, or MediaPortal (all free).

What's the model of your capture card?

Thank You rebootjim this will be very helpful.

The problems I've had trying to record VCRs and also learn how this new machine works would fill a book. After changing the card and sending the whole machine back to the factory for a reimaging, I've concluded that it must be the software I'm using.

The card is a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR at least that's what it says on the card itself. I've been told that it the same as the WinTV-PVR-150 but I can't verify that. The Tech people at HP don't refer to as the 150, but it looks just like the 150 on the Hauppauge website.

Again, thank you, I'll try each of your suggestions.
