Recently been getting the following errors when I burn a CD-R with Nero8. DVD's work fine.

    "Focus or tracking error"
    "Invalid write state"

Drive is a MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-842S on a Sony Vaio laptop

I recently wiped my laptop and reinstalled Vista with SP1. Don't think I've burn't a CD since then. Could this be the cause? Anybody have any similar experience?

    Thanks,

laptop burners are not as robust as the ones that go in a desktop. It is possible that your burner is done. you could try burning slower, maybe a disc cleaner.
The drive uses 2 different lasers to burn DVDs and CDs.

Interesting, I'd wondered if it was two seperate lasers.

But I changed media, now it works! phew.

Bit iritated that i have a stack of 50 rubbish CD's. But glad my burners not had it.

Glad you figured it out.Quality media always help. Also make sure your burner's firmware is updated.
    Cheers.
