My CD ROM drive is not working. It says that D:\ is not accessible. The device is not ready. I've tried removing it from the Device Manager and the Drive is recognized after a reboot, but still does not work. Any input on this would be appreciated. I've recently bought a new DVD RW-R and before I install it, I want to make sure that the Drive is going to work. I tried it in Safe Mode and still it will not read.

    Thanks,
    josetoo

Did the drive come with an installation disc? If so, use device manager or add hardware in the control panel to reinstall the drivers.

ddp, no there are none. And before I attempt to flash, I want to make sure I've tried everything, cause I won't be able to save all my files and folders from the hard drive. The Rom I have installed now is made by Pacific Digital, and I already have the firmware downloaded for my specific unit.

    Thanks for the quick response!

    ddp,
Any other suggestions that you may have, I would appreciate a great deal. The Rom Drive didn't come with any installation disk.

    Thanks again,

    ddp,

I know I'm probably driving you crazy, but I tried the ide cable, removing and replacing. It's set on master, like it's supposed to be. Let me explain, the whole story. It quit reading, it blinks like it wants to start, but doesn't. It ejects, it's saying in Device Manager that it's working properly, it didn't come with any installation drive disk. I've run antivirus checks, and nothings coming up. Pacific Digital the manufacture said directed me to a flash download, for my specific model, but I'm still leary about flashing, cause it warns that you may lose anything saved on the Hard Drive. I have a new NEC model, should I try it?

yes. you don't lose the info on the hd when trying to do a firmware change, you just lose the rom drive. try using a cd/dvd disk cleaner to clean the laser lens.

    ddp,

I used a lens cleaner and still I'm getting a D: is not accessible. I also tried it in another computer and it worked fine.

uninstall the drive in the device manager than restart windows to let it load it's driver to see if can read disks or not.

    ddp,

I've tried that already, and no luck. I've even went into Safe Mode, and found that the first Rom that came with the computer, was showing up and so was the second Rom. I removed the first and restarted in Safe Mode to make sure that it didn't show up again, which it didn't.
