I have had my computer for a month and a half now. I burned CD's fine but now suddenly I can't. I did have Easy CD Creator on my computer but I noticed that too has disappeared. I have tried a System restore several times- didn't work. I tried deleting the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters in the Regedit - didn't work. I've also tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it - didn't work either.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I can see the drive letter in explorer and the light blinks for a a few seconds when booting up the computer but no sign of life thereafter.

It's as though it's there but it's not.

The cd-rw drive is a LITE-ON LTR 48247S. It's as though it suddenly died but like I said, I've only had for less than 2 months.

When I selected the drive it will say 'Insert a new disk' when there is a disk in the drive already.

If you've got burner problems, what you might need to do is to uninstall the drive from Windowd, reboot and let Windows automatically reinstall the device for you. To do so, (1) Control Panel, (2) System, (3) Hardware, (4) Device Manager, (5) Expand the DVD/CD-ROM Drives entry, right click on thr troublesome drive and uninstall it. Now simply reboot and let Windows try and repair itself.

I'm going to tag along on this thread if it's OK, I've got a similar problem.

As of the other day my CD ROM and CD RW drives both decided to crap out at the same time. I am running Win XP Pro on a home built machine.

Both drives were working for quite some time without a hint of any problems. In device manager they are both listed, but now have exclamation marks next to them.

I have tried removing both and letting windows refind them. It does but with the same error.

I have gone to the Plextor site to see if there were updates for the drivers, but it said it uses the Windows drivers. I did download some firmware for the drive, but when I try to install it, I get an error that the drive does not exist.

There is power to the drives, because I was able to eject both CD's using the button on front.

I opened the case, tried putting a known working CD on the secondary cable. No go. decided to reseat the cables and everything seemed tight so I tried rebooting again with the original configuration. The drives continue to show in device manager with yellow exclamation marks.

Took cable from slave on primary cable and connected a known working CD rom. Still no go.
I have run Adaware, Spybot, Norton AV and Stinger and have no problems there.

BTW: With all the changes the correct drives still show in the BIOS.

I updated my BIOS just for kicks, the old version was 6 mos. older. I have a dual boot machine with Win98 SE and XP Pro. After replacing the MB 6 months ago I have not used 98, but recently tried with the CD problem I'm having. Whole bunch of new hardware for the new MB was found but I could not install because the CD rom was not working.

Booted to start up disc with CD support. Installed the Win98 files from the CD to a Win98 folder on the C drive. Reboot to 98se and pointed to the Win98 folder on the C drive to install the drivers for the new hardware it found. I was able to boot to Win 98 and did have CD rom support. My internet connection was not configured in 98 so I reboot to XP. Still no CD support in XP.

I'm thinking that possibly the XP drivers got corrupted somehow. How can I reinstall the original drivers if the CD drive is not recognized. I'm open to any other thoughts. I have also been considering a repair install of XP from the Win 98 partition.

That sound you here is me pulling my hair out and truthfully I can't afford to loose any more.

In my first post I had mentioned that I had already uninstalled the driver and then had let Windows Xp reinstall the driver. It still didn't work.

I've had similar troubles in the past; oftentimes, it results from a software conlfict of some kind, especially among multiple cd recording software. I didn't even have the famous upperfilter and lowerfilter values in the registry! I would start by uninstalling all cd burning software, uninstalling the drives, and rebooting. Hopefully that does the trick. I actually had Alcohol 120% hang in the middle of mounting an .iso once, and I had to force it to shut down. Then my drives wouldn't work. I didn't have my drives working again until I did the aforementioned procedure and, of all things, reinstalled Alcohol. It's frustrating, for sure, but I still say it's got to be a software/configuration issue somewhere. I wish I could give more specific instruction, but there are a ton of variables there.

After doing some research on line (Google - What more do you need?) I came to the conclusion my problem had something to do with the registry. There were 2 lines that needed to be deleted, which I did. After those deletions I decided to run a Registry Cleaner (after backing up of course) and it found about 75 invalid entries. I went and deleted all, and so far have not seen any problems (but it's early yet). The bottom line is I now have both my CDRW and CD Rom working properly within Win XP.

Thanks for all the suggestions that helped zero in on what the problem was. Between the help forums and Google there is almost no excuse for getting your PC to work properly. It just takes a little perseverance and patience.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:

    1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
    2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
    4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
    6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

The trick above worked for me, but now when I try to burn CD's, my burning software says it can't recognize any CDR drives. Any tips?

Consider trying the drives on a different machine?

Did you correct this problem yet? Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the CD burning software as specified in the last step?

I too had this problem where XP would not recognize 2 drives, one cdrw and one dvd rom. Thanks to mb100 for the timely tip. I altered my registry, and viola', XP now sees my drives. Thanks again!

As much as I would like to be able to take credit for that tip, I have to admit it took a couple of days of 'google searching' to finally find the answer. Tagged on to this post because it was on topic and hadn't yet found the answer. Glad I could be of help when I finally did find the answer.

I'm having the same kind of problem. My CDRW drive is Lite-On LTR-40125S. One day it stopped accessing CDRW-discs. There's nothing wrong with the discs, I tested them in another machine and they worked fine. I even reinstalled XP using repair but it didn't fix the problem with CDRW discs.

When I try to uninstall my drive from Control Panel, I get BSOD 0x0000008E. If I go to Safe Mode, I can remove the drive, but when rebooting into normal mode I get the BSOD again. If I go to Safe Mode and let the drive get recognized it will work again in normal mode upon next reboot, but not reading CDRWs.

I found the LowerFilters value and deleted it, made no difference.

Any tips left for me? :)

Edited to add: I also uninstalled my only CDR software Ahead Nero; made no difference to the situation.

To further clarify, the drive reads audio CDs and burned CDRs just fine.

    newsflash:

The CDRW discs work now. Not sure what made it happen though. After the earlier post I installed both XP SP1 and new VIA 4in1 drivers.. I guess one of those did the trick..

I have 3 drives (cdrw, dvdrw, dvdrom) and one of them ain't working (cdrw). It used to work until I installed VirtualCd and now, after re-installing winXP it's still not working. I was wondering if rest of you have also virtualCD installed?

I, for one, did not have VirtualCD installed. I think the only effective way to resolve the problem is to modify the registry as outlined above.

    Good Luck!
