no DVDs cannot be read by a CD player. the data on a DVD disc is a much thinner spiral than CDs therefore CD lasers cannot read DVDs.

if you want to backup your CD collection however, why not make image files of your CDs then burn them onto a data-dvd. That way you can burn those images back to CD at a later time.

if you have mp3s you can do the same by storing them on a data dvd for backup, just like you would any other file, but still the DVD will not be read by a normal cd player

    djscoop,

How long would it take to backup a CD collection of 600 CD's, using the image-file process?

What software do you recommend? The cheaper the cost, the better...

    Thanks in advance.

software I would recommend clone cd. You figure a 48 X burner can copy a CD in about 5 minutes, so thats 3000 minutes, or about 50 hours. Thats quite a bit of work right there...

DMC is good for encoding, but neither it or imtoo is as good as EAC for ripping.

besides, he wanted to copy CDs, not rip them...

I wouldn't burn them that fast 20X at most!!!!!!

he doesnt mean burn a backup of them, he means it can read them at that speed onto your hdd.

I would personally go for the image backup aproach. You dont want to MAKE 600 backup cd's do you? You just want a way to have the backup in case something happened and you needed to burn a copy at that time.

If thats the case than an image backup is the way to go. That way you can burn the backup images to a DVD or better yet grab a HDD to store them on.

Ok, so if you want to back up your cd collection to a dvd your cd player won't read it. what about a PS2, dvd plyer or Xbox?

Nothing reads image files except computers. Even then an optical drive emulator like the awsome Daemon Tools must be used to make since of the file(s).

I support the image backup idea! Its 100% lossless. Thats better than WAVE files (99.99% lossless) :)
