    mickah,
Thanks for reply, but i have read on this site that the starview box can be used just as a free to air box, to do this do you have to remove the bin files etc. any ideas

once ya go Nagra 3, it wont be worth keeping, the whole lot of the chans will be gone, FTA and non FTA chans

    That's incorrect.

BBC/ITV/C4 etc are not encrypted so you can use your cable box to view those.

Use your box as before - you just won't get as many channels.

Providers can encrypt all channels if they wish.
When N3 hits your area you could connect cable direct to TV.
You will pick up all FTA channels on TV

Virgin in my area in the last four months have not encrypted the channels I mentioned (after the introduction of N3 and the withdrawal of N1).

Not all TVs will acccept a cable connection. Mine certainly will not.

Firstly, N3 kicked in here (ireland), all chans bar one or two are gone, what you will be left with is a couple of chans that you will get anyway via the cable, so whats the point of having a box with chans on it that you will get either way via your normal cable?? waste of time, just look at other options available at this stage and move on.......

Ireland is a completely different situation. You'll get a lot more channels in the UK as I believe Virgin are obliged to provide certain channels (eg publicly funded/owned by the British taxpayer).

I still use my linux box as it's a very good PVR and has other advantages (I can network it for example and watch avis from my PC).

As for a starview, depends what you want from it. As I said in answer to the original question, you can use it as a FTA box using the firmware you have installed. Whether the poster actually wants to is up to them, surely? I was answering the question that was asked.

and I was offering him the other option, I am aware of the UK law and how it differs from Ireland, even so, a couple of chans on it at best, is it worth plugging in, not really, considering he will get the same using cable, but as you say up to the person what they want to do with it.

More like ten to fifteen. (Never counted and I'm overseas at the moment.)

As far as I'm aware there is no difference between the UK law and the Irish law in regard to the obligation they have to provide the 'FTA' channels no matter what. They are only obliged to broadcast them in analogue though, not digital. Which means they can, in essence, changeover all channels to N3 whenever they like and continue broadcasting the FTA channels via analogue. There is no mention of them being forced to allow people to use a FTA receiver (whatever brand) to receive FTA channels on their system. This is EU law not UK/Ireland. Actually, it is an EU directive from a few years back.

Either way, Virgin have been broadcasting ten to fifteen channels in areas that have been using the new encryption only since early December.

Whatever the reason for it, that's a fact and I have heard nothing that suggests that will change before Easter, by which time the original poster's area will probably have had the N1 stream withdrawn.

    As you were.

So the BBC is under no obligation to provide BBC1 in digital in the UK?

Out of curiosity tony is the N2 stream present? We had all the as we would call 'FTA' channels for quite a few months after the premium went and then one day it was goodnight and full changeover had been complete with only N3 stream present. Caught us quite by surprise!

What?? The BBC of course is under obligation to be FTA! It is already being broadcast via 'Freeview' (DTT) so that is covered in the EU directive which means VM or UPC here doesn't have to provide a digital version, only analogue.

N2 (the preliminary changover encryption that the RoI had for a while) has never been present in the UK on any channels.

UPC? I thought we were discussing the UK? The bloke asking the question is in Lincs.

Cheers, I was curious about that. In my opinion all the boxes will become defunct as they are here when full migration has been complete. That is the whole point of them changing encryption. We all thought here the same as you when we were at the same stage. Unfortunately that wasn't the case so I see no reason for it to be any different in your case. Look at other european countries who have gone N3 on cable! They are in exactly the same boat as us here in Ireland so why would UK be any different?

Because the British pay a licence fee for their TV and radio.

The BBC may have been free to you. It's not to us. We've already paid.

    That's the difference.
