is there such a piece of equipment as an adapter that would allow a power lead that is meant to be plugged into the socket in a car to be plugged into a mains supply in a house ?

you'll need a power adapter that plugs into the house & fits the power connector in the screen. needs 12 volts output plus whatever watts or amps required. looks like the power adapter on your speakers, printer or lcd screen.
