codec problems

    Hi,This is all new to me, but after downloading a movie,when i tried to play it on windows media player,it says i need the right codecs. Any idea how i would know what codecs i would need and where to get them. If i have just asked a thick question,sorry but i am pulling my hair out. Many thanks

    Get Gspot (a small, free program) and open the avi in it.
    It will tell you what codec(s) you need.
    Then you can download and install them from the net.
