Ok here goes another newbie question. I am wanting to copy a dvd movie to the my HD. Yet here's the catch, I would like the file to be compressed (or shrunk, whatever...) and I would like it to be in a AVI format.

I would hope that what I am doing isn't illegal or anything. I already own the movies and I don't have a DVD Burner. The AVI file that I would like to have is one that just plays the movie, no menu options.

You may also have a look at Nero Digital (shipped with Nero 6). This tool converts your DVD to MPEG-4, which saves a lot of space if you intend to watch the movie on your PC only (not on a standalone player).

The associated player is Nero ShowTime (shipped with Nero 6 also).

Notice you'll have to rip the DVD first, for instance with DVD Decrypter or SmartRipper (both free).

    Cheers,
