Are you using the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Vista?

More likely to be a hardware problem then. Your PC sounds quite new, so why not get Dell's warranty team to sort it out?

sorry for late reply but i had dell on the phone (cost me £17) and they were convinced it was not hardware related. Kept telling me to system restore or re-install windows which i have done countless times witch works great for a short while but then the problem happens again do i need to buy replacement Hard drives, or is there a way to fix this?

If you can, try installing XP on the system instead of Vista and see if that works for you.

Can you run a SMART program like Speedfan and see what that tells you, specifically?

    http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
Download and install, then look at the SMART section, and click the button that says it performs an online analysis. Post the results here.

lol can't do that i'm on my laptop. the xps is still out of commission unless i take out the failed hdd and re-install vista on the working hdd. Maybe just doing that will solve all my problems anyway (part from the one dead hhd)

Ah well, if you know the HDD is dead, there's little point. If you know the HDD is dead, whine at Dell about it, and I mean really make a fuss. It is company policy to take the easiest route out of a complaint in the PC industry, so make a big enough fuss and they should do something about it. If not, just RMA the hard disk to whoever manufactured it, and they'll replace it for you quickly.
