hi I got a computer from a friend who got tired of his computer keep on resetting itself now and then. The computer work fine when it on but for unknow reason it reset itself. My question is this because of the power supply or a harddrive going bad? thank tony
Hi Could be lots of things. Main issue if its a random reset could be heat...or overheat. Try taking the cover off and looking to see if there is a build-up or dirt and dust especially on the processor heatsink/ fan. Check to see if the vents are clear and if the problem is worse if you are doing something memory/ graphics card intensive as this will make the temp peak.
To find out if it is to do with Temperatures, why not Try a temperature monitoring program such as core temp or speed fan. There are many out there and some work better than others so i normally use two different ones that show more or less the same readings for the CPU. This is how i would eliminate the possibility of heat causing the restarts. Graphics cards and faulty ram can also cause random restarts along with a faulty PSU. Try to eliminate 1 thing at a time. Try swapping your ram for some that you know to be working (borrow if you have to), If you still get random restarts then it cant be that. Know move to your graphics card, If your mobo has on board video try removing the G/card and using the on board graphics for a while. Then maybe try swapping you PSU for a know working unit and so and so ... Please post back with your findings
