I am converting home movies from vhs to dvd. The first one last night, using a Magnavox dvd recorder with vhs also, worked ok. I brought the dvd to the computer and then with some other software was able to split out the vob files to avi, then (I had a vhs tape with multiple home snippets and wanted to break those out separately (by kid). Each additional try, I try to get the dvd recorder to use the time, that is closest to the vhs tape length. Today, the tape is 2:03. I chose the 2:30 minute option. This leaves the newly created dvd movie and another option on the dvd recorder screen with is essentially 27 min of blank. (as if I have two choices, what to watch) Taking that dvd to the computer, the computer will not recognize the dvd. Tried 3 times, with different dvd lengths chosen. (the first vhs I dubbed to dvd was around 4 hours). How might I get the dvd to record without the extra (I'm contemplating pausing the vhs at a time where I can lose 2-3 minutes without issue). So the computer will read the dvd.?
I'm not clear about the nature of the problem - except that the PC doesn't recognize the disk? You should be able to press the stop button on the recorder at any time, finalize the disk and the PC should see it.
I thought I had it set to auto finalize. I will retry and do it manually to check. I'll be back to let you know
That was the key. After it recorded, I manually told it to finalize and it worked. (at least I can see the vob files on the computer) Thanks
