Computer wont start up

just the other day when i tried to start up my hp pc i got this mssage
Wondows could not start bcause the following file is missing or corrupt

<windows root>\system32\hal.dll

iv tried using system restore but it will not work i orded recovery disc for my compuer model from HP with these disc will i be able to fix my computer without reformating??

 

simple way to do this would be to copy and paste the file onto a floppy (from a mates comp) and then c + P the file to the directory. i'm assuming you can't get onto windows so you will have to set up your drive as a slave. so you would need another hard drive with windows on ( i keep a spare just in case comp F*s up so i don't have to reinstall) if so you could just copy and paste from second drive

or

browse he net (google is your friend) to find the file

or

pm me and i will send you the file via email

its actually a service pack file so it really shouldnt stop windows loading

 

I fully agree with RavenLife. He considered all ways possible. Still try antivirus check. who knows...

 

thanks for the suggestion too bad i dont got another hard drive with windows i got the recovery disc now but i try running them they ruin but at 70% done it says its running but it wont pass 70%

 

ok i have an update on the problem i finally fiqured out how to clear the entire drive i clarded which obviously erased my operating system and HP tells me my recovery disc will reinstal XP home i tried it but it didnt work it finshed the recovery but it still said a fil was missing like before and now i cnt even strt recovery any more when i try to start my comp the hp thing comes up then it oes to a black screen and just stays there

i hve 2 drives would it work if i switchd the second one to master and tried to install xp on there?

post the model number of your computer...so someone can see if it has a way to clear your pc's cmos..
