confused

hi can anyone tell me how i can convert .avi movies to burn to dvd.
i can burn the movies thanks very much to the exelent walk thru's on this forum but they always come out with the top an bottom as a black line. i use nero 7 premuim is it something im doing or is it because im trying to burn the .avi files that cause the problem
