I am not 100% sure this is the right forum, but if I am wrong, just move my thread. Here is my problem: Windows seems to be stuck in a continuous booting cycle. If I turn my computer on, the HP splash screen shows, then it loads GRUB boot loader, and I select windows. Then the windows splash screen shows and the computer restarts and the process goes again. It started this morning. I got up, and my computer was frozen. So I restarted it. Since then it has been doing that. About 2-3 days ago I ran HiJackThis an deleted a bunch of things that I thought I didn't need, and my computer hasn't been off since then. That may have been the problem. That was my first assumption so I thought I would run the HP recovery tool, which meant I need to press F10 on the HP splash screen. I tryed that and it isn't working, it just continues onto the GRUB boot loader. Its seems as if pressing F10 didn't do anything. So my question to you is, what is wrong with my computer. PS I am running Windows XP SP1 (Due to my lack of updating) My keyboard is a PS2 connector so it should be recognized on hte HP splash screen. I just installed a new graphics card 2 days after christmas (assuming that matters)
In the wrong hands hijackthis can be a very dangerous program. You need to let a skilled virus fighter look at your logs and tell you where to go from there. A new video card with all new drivers could also be the source of the problem. You would need to get your system to forget the old card and its drivers and accept the new ones. Video cards and video drivers can be a royal pain in the butt. Try ATI drivers sometime. They will turn you into a drunk in minutes And put in service pack 2. It's not the end of the world and your system will be safer.
Soo, how can I get Windows to completely boot so I can install SP2? My other video card was an on-board, so how would I go getting the computer to recognize it.
Well nobody is sure what the problem is. So take the card out and use the inboard card just like when the system was working. Im betting you deleated something that should have not been deleated but i keep an open mind
Your cpu could also not be in contact with ur heatsink fan properly causing your computer to keep rebooting also...
Well no...my comp is also a few years old and this happened to mines a few months ago...i'm not saying this is your problem its just a possibility and it might be worth checking...
jus make sure that u disconnect ur comp completely from the mains supply before u open it up..open the computer, its just a couple of screws, now on the motherboard u will see a fan connected to it, now be careful when doin this...there should be four clips that secures the fan onto the motherboard and there are arrows on top of them indicating the way they should be turned to loosen it off... loosen the clips diagonally from each other around the fan, try not to force it! as it can be a little awkward, remember the fan will be connected to the motherboard with a wire conection also so disconnect this also and check the fan is clean and completely free from dust, now to put the fan back onto the motherboard just push the clips down again diagonally from each other til u hear them click into place thats it, wiggle the fan slightly to make sure its secure...it might also be worth checking that all the other connections on your motherboard are ok and get all dust out with a hoover or somethin jus remember and make sure that the mains is disconnected lol
Can you get F8 to work and then click on "last known good config" or select safe mode and use system restore, (dual booting linux will disable F10 recovery console,it's best to clone the original disk first to a 2ndry hdd,and then install linux to the new hdd and keep original for backup) Since HP don't supply xp as disks,you can go to microsoft and get XP SP1 or XP SP2 for floppy or burn to rom and then reformat the hdd that way,assuming your problem is caused by a corruption in the registry and not hardware The question is what was the last thing you did before it turned to custard,if it was deleting with HiJack then there is a corruption in the registry You can stop it restarting (assuming you can get to safe mode)by clicking properties in "my computer" clik "advanced" in startup and recovery clik "settings" and tick automatically restart in "system falure"
The very last thing I did was play World of Warcraft. I left it on the login screen, and went to bed. I woke up, it was frozen. I restarted, now it is custard.
Ok I tryed what you said, I get the list when I press F8, but when I press "last known good config" it asks me to pick "Microsoft Windows XP" or "Microsoft Windows Recorvery Tool". Hitting windows just starts the rebooting process again. Pressing the recovery tool gives me access to C:/WINDOWS Any more ideas?
And alas, after multiple attempts at trying to get my computer to work. I still have failed. Anymore suggestions... I am very open to ideas for now.
