My PVR saves files as TS which I understand are basically mpeg2

Using ffmpeg to convert to mpeg2 takes quite some time and there is a fair loss of quality.

Playback of the TS using VLC is fine but a conversion would be convenient so that I can playback on my Sony TV.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

    Hard work...
taking long time, i think it's the file size problem
Try other tools, but sure that It's impossible to convert dvd/video without losing quality!

I may be mistaken but thought ts files were basically mpeg2.

If this is so I am puzzled as to the quality loss and time taken.

I can get good quality but it takes for ages.

You don't have it quite right ..

.ts is a raw mpeg transport stream containing various audio and video elements.. it's not mpeg2 .. that's one reason it's taking a long time to convert.. the loss of quality is most likely because you are changing from 1080p hd to standard 720x576 interlaced (or not) mpeg2 for dvd.
